Check the conditions and exceptions
Normally, sickness allowance requires a continuous contract, enough accumulated paid sickness days, at least four consecutive sick days and appropriate medical certification. The four-day threshold has exceptions for pregnancy check-ups, post-confinement medical treatment and miscarriage.
Pregnancy check-ups can use attendance certificates. Specified anti-epidemic movement restrictions have separate proof rules. Apply these only to their stated cases; the official FAQ explains the evidence required.

Check the unused sickness days
Paid sickness days accumulate at two per completed month during the first twelve months and four per completed month afterwards, up to 120 days. Category 1 holds up to 36; Category 2 up to 84 with additional certificate conditions. Check the category and unused days, not just the current absence.

Use the applicable average wages
The daily allowance is four-fifths of applicable average daily wages. For consecutive sick days, the first day determines the preceding twelve-calendar-month window; shorter employment uses its actual period. Exclude qualifying days and their corresponding wages together. Do not substitute salary divided by thirty.
Fictional example: verified average daily wages of HK$200 × four-fifths × four qualifying days gives HK$640. This is a gross allowance reference, not an automatic top-up or payment record. Check wages already covering those dates before adding an amount.

Check timing and separate protections
Pay sickness allowance no later than the normal payday. Chapter 5 excludes a statutory holiday entitled to holiday pay and employment-injury incapacity for which compensation is payable under the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance. Dismissal on paid sickness days is prohibited except summary dismissal for serious misconduct; this guide does not calculate termination entitlements.

Keep the sickness-day record
Keep employment dates, accumulated days by category, days taken and allowance paid for which days. Within seven days after return from paid sick leave, the employee must sign the sickness-day record; it must be available for inspection. Keep medical evidence private and outside this pilot’s uploads.

Know what this calculator does
The public and private quick calculator’s Paid leave count retains base pay. Detailed Calendar sick-leave dates flag review only. A saved average-wage reference supplies no eligibility decision, statutory sickness-day ledger or allowance posting. Notes and files are not monthly-pay save gates. These limits do not authorize a pay cut or override better contractual terms.
Good questions deserve clear answers.
Does two days’ illness automatically mean unpaid leave?
No. Duration alone does not establish an unpaid-leave arrangement. Check the applicable statutory conditions, exceptions and contract before changing wages.
Does the calculator calculate sickness allowance?
No. The Paid leave count retains base pay and detailed sick dates flag review. A saved average-wage reference does not establish eligibility or post allowance.
Is the fictional HK$640 an extra payment?
Not automatically. It is the gross allowance reference for the stated qualifying example. Check wages already covering those dates and record actual payment separately.
